Phonics
Phonics at Hope
We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to deliver high quality phonics teaching and learning to teach our children to read, write and spell.
Word recognition and understanding is essential to enable our children to become skilled and fluent readers.
We embed early reading skills in Foundation Stage, where our children’s reading journey starts and then by the end of Year 2 the majority are fluent readers.
The children learn set 1 sounds and then learn to blend and read words with these sounds.
The children then go on to read Set 2 and 3 sounds and words.
When the children are in the Spring Term of Year 2, if they have completed the Phonics programme, they will then move onto RWI Comprehension.
For those children who have gaps in their Phonics knowledge when they leave KS1, they will participate in the Fresh Start Phonics intervention programme.
We focus on delivering high quality phonics lessons.

There is additional information for parents via the Seesaw Family App including presentations outlining how we teach the children to read the Set 1 sounds and how we teach the children to read and blend the Set 1 sounds.
We hold our Reading workshop for Reception parents at the start of each year, introducing parents to how RWI works and how they can access videos and guides on Seesaw
