  • E-Safety advice and support for parents/carers

    Tue 31 Oct 2017

Our school is committed to educating children to create digital citizens who contribute to the online world in a positive and considerate way.  Here are some resources and links to websites that maybe of interest to you.

    Social Media

You can find some practical guidance for parents and carers whose children are using social media by clicking here:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/490001/Social_Media_Guidance_UKCCIS_Final_18122015.pdf.pdf

Facebook is the most popular Social Networking site on the internet.  It was launched in 2004 and has an estimated 1.94 billion users.  You can find more information about how protect yourself online, how to report issues and how to deactivate your account here: http://dwn5wtkv5mp2x.cloudfront.net/ufiles/Facebook_check_Feb_15.pdf

Instagram is photograph and video sharing application and is particularly popular with children and teenagers.  For further guidance of how you can stay safe when using Instagram, how to report any issues or how to deactivate your account click here:

    http://dwn5wtkv5mp2x.cloudfront.net/ufiles/Instagram-Safety-4x4-Checklist_web.pdf

Misical.ly allows users to create, share and discover new videos.  It allows users to create short videos of them dancing, performing or lip-syncing to music and share them online via their app.  As with other social media sites users can set their profiles to private or public.  You can access more information about musical.ly by clicking here:

    http://parentinfo.org/system/files/attachments/Musical%20ly%20Parent%20Guide.pdf

Snapchat is a messenger app that allows you to send photos, videos, text and drawings.  The unique feature of Snapchat is that the message only stays on the recipient's phone for a matter of seconds.  Further guidance on where to find privacy settings, report abuse and deactivate your account can be found here:

    http://swgfl.org.uk/products-services/esafety/resources/Snapchat-Checklist/Snapchat-Checklist_new_2

Whatsapp is a free messenger app that enables users to send messages, images, video and audio using the internet and is popular amongst children.  Further information on how to restrict access to whatsapp can be found here:

    Online Gaming

Online gaming has changed the gaming world for our children, they can now play against other gamers at any time.  This world can be scary for parents who don't necessarily access these games themselves.  Practical advice for parents can be found here:

    http://www.childnet.com/ufiles/Online-gaming.pdf

It is worth noting that games are subject to similar age ratings as films are.  The system for rating games is called the PEGI rating, we would encourage you to familiarise yourself with these ratings which can be found here:

    http://parentinfo.org/article/pegi-games-ratings-explained

Roblox is becoming an increasingly popular gaming site for children & teenagers.  This site is a 'user-generated' site, meaning all of the games on the site have been created by users themselves.  They have produced a parent's guide with tips for keeping children safe while using Roblox - this is available here:

    https://corp.roblox.com/parents/

Minecraft is another site that is hugely popular with children and teenagers alike but do you know your 'Griefers' from your 'Creepers'?  The NSPCC has produced a helpful guidance tool to familiarise parents with the different elements of the game and advise how to protect your children when they are playing, this is available here:

    https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/minecraft-a-parents-guide/

    Reporting

There may be occasions where you need to report incidents that happen while online, this could be due to online bullying or another form of abuse.  If you need to make a report to CEOP (who are a command of the National Crime Agency) this can be done here:
    https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/

If you need to report something to a social networking site or a gaming provider, this could be due to inappropriate language being used on a site you can find the contact details of most of the popular social media and gaming providers by clicking here:

  • A fond farewell.....

    Sun 16 Jul 2017

    A fond farewell……

After a long and distinguished career in education, Mrs Basnett has announced her retirement.  She played a key role in the creation of  Hope Primary six years ago and establishing it as the fantastic school it is today.

Mrs Basnett said, “Hope Primary has been one of the highlights of my career. It's a wonderful school and community and I am proud to have worked with the children, families, staff and parish communities. Hope is not only a school, it's a family where each and every member is cherished. I have loved my time here and feel privileged to have been instrumental in establishing Hope and see it flourish as a haven and a beacon of learning within our community. I wish the school every success for the future.”

We wish her a long and happy retirement.

    Goodbye to…

Mrs Cannon will also be retiring at the end of the Summer term. It brings to a close many years of distinguished service at Hope and formally St Dominic’s. Over the years, Mrs Cannon has supported hundreds of children and parents to achieve great things. We thank her for all her support over the years and for her contributions to the school. We wish her a well earned and happy retirement!

Miss Carran will be leaving Hope to take up a new position in Birmingham. During her short time as Learning Mentor, she has been a valued member of our school. We wish Miss Carran good luck in her new post.

  • Hope Reflects......

    Sat 25 Mar 2017

    Dear Parents/Carers

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the sudden death of Mrs Frances McMahon who has been a member of staff here at Hope Primary and formally St Dominic’s for over 20 years.

Your children were informed of her passing this morning whilst in their classrooms. We later gathered together to share our thoughts, reflect and pray together as a school family. Rev Andrew helped us reflect through story and prayer. Children have been encouraged to draw or write their thoughts and prayers for Mrs McMahon and her family. These will be offered up at St Luke’s on Sunday and St Dominic’s at a later date. They will then be passed on to the family. Our thoughts are with Mrs McMahon’s family at this sad time.

When someone dies it is normal for family and friends to experience many different feelings like sadness, anger and confusion, and children are likely to ask questions about the death that need to be answered honestly and factually in terms that they will understand.

The children have been told that their teachers are willing to try and answer their questions at school but if there is anything else you or your child needs to know, please do not hesitate to ring the school office and we will be more than happy to help you.

    Yours sincerely,

Mrs B Basnett and Mr J Casson

    Fri 18 Mar 2016
We have had a wonderful day today testing out our skills on the Climbing and Bouldering Walls and on Spider Mountain. We also had a cake sale and all monies raised will go to Sport Relief to enable children to access education rather than having to work and support their families.
  • Easter Service

    Thu 17 Mar 2016
Today we celebrated our easter service in the hall with the 4 Saints and Emma. They explained the meaning of the cross to us in a fun way. There was lots of slime about and they tested our general knowledge. Many thanks for the lovely service that helps us remember the meaning of the cross and reminds us all just how much Jesus loves us.
  • Y2/3 residential visit to Crosby Hall

    Mon 14 Mar 2016
Children had a wonderful time during their weekend visit to Crosby Hall where they learned lots of new skills and had great fun together. A big thank you to the staff who gave up their weekend and went along to support. Check out our school blog and twitter account for photos and watch out for a meeting to be held shortly to share in the fun as the children talk about their experiences and share photos.
